Surf Life Saving SA appoints James Sellers as new Chief Executive Officer
Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA) is pleased to announce the appointment of James Sellers as its new Chief Executive Officer, with James set to commence his new role in October 2026.
James joins SLSSA from Scouts SA, where he currently serves as Chief Executive Officer, leading a statewide organisation supported by more than 5,000 volunteers and more than 150 staff. During his tenure, James has overseen significant organisational transformation, including the development of Scouts SA’s first whole-of-organisation strategic plan, a major financial turnaround, and initiatives to strengthen engagement and alignment across volunteers, staff and stakeholders.
SLSSA President Sarah Cutbush said it was this leadership experience, combined with James’ understanding of volunteer organisations and his shared values, that stood out through the recruitment process.
“James has a proven track record in financial sustainability, strategic planning and navigating complex challenges with a grounded, collaborative and long-term approach. Just as importantly, his experience in not-for-profit and volunteer-led environments, combined with his ability to build trust, foster authentic relationships and bring people together, gives us great confidence that he is the right person to lead SLSSA into its next chapter,” Ms Cutbush said.
“James also shares our connection to the water and understands the important role our members play in keeping South Australians safe. We are excited to welcome him to SLSSA and look forward to the contribution he will make as he works alongside our clubs and volunteers to continue building on the strong foundations already in place.”
James said he was excited to join an iconic organisation with such a proud history and important role in South Australian communities.
“The connection people have with the coast is something I understand personally through my own experiences surfing, swimming and spending time in the ocean. The beach has always been an important part of my life, and I have a deep respect for the role surf lifesavers play in keeping our communities safe - not only along our coastline, but across inland waterways too,” Mr Sellers said.
“My experience leading Scouts SA has reinforced for me that the strength of any volunteer organisation comes from the passion, commitment and connection of its people. I know the importance of listening to volunteers, understanding what matters to them and continuing to foster an environment and culture where people can thrive. I look forward to bringing that approach to SLSSA to support the incredible contribution surf lifesavers make across South Australia.”
Surf Life Saving South Australia is one of the state’s most iconic and trusted organisations, working tirelessly on the frontline and behind the scenes of coastal and inland water safety. With more than 8,000 members across 23 clubs, SLSSA delivers lifesaving services, training, surf sports and community programs across metropolitan, regional and rural South Australia, helping create safer beaches and waterways for communities across the state.
The 2026/27 patrol season will commence on Saturday 10 October 2026 and run through to Easter Monday 5 April 2027.
