Empowering the Next Generation of Surf Life Saving Leaders
The Futures Board is an advisory group established by Surf Life Saving South Australia (SLSSA) to provide insights and recommendations on future-focused matters, particularly those impacting younger members across the organisation.
The Futures Board currently reports to the Board of SLSSA. This ensures alignment with the organisation's strategic direction and responsiveness to emerging issues.
Our Objectives:
Youth Engagement: Create a supportive environment for young members to understand SLSSA’s governance structures.
Advocacy: Represent the needs of younger members, addressing challenges and proposing future-focused solutions.
Innovation: Recommend initiatives that provide world-leading opportunities for SLSSA members.
Guidance: Offer advice to the SLSSA Board and State Council on matters relating to youth and the future of surf life saving in SA.

Sabrina Warwar - chair
BRIGHTON SLSC
Sabrina Warwar is a dedicated surf lifesaving member with a decade of experience spanning patrols, competition, and team leadership. Beginning her surf lifesaving journey in 2009, Sabrina competed in surf sports throughout high school and reignited her passion through IRB racing. She has since represented Newport Surf Club at local, state, and national levels, including selection for the NSW Interstate IRB Team at the Australian Championships. Recently relocating to Adelaide, Sabrina now supports Brighton Surf Life Saving Club’s IRB racing team and is committed to fostering community engagement and operational excellence in South Australia’s coastal operations.
Professionally, Sabrina brings over seven years of experience in public health and healthcare consulting. She has held key roles at PwC Healthcare Consulting, NPS MedicineWise, and Digivate Health Advisory, where she worked with hospitals, public health departments, and aged care providers. Sabrina specializes in governance, stakeholder engagement, project management, and program design, with expertise in co-design facilitation and data-driven analysis.
A passionate advocate for inclusivity and communication, Sabrina’s fluency in Portuguese and her experience engaging diverse communities equip her to drive positive change.

clancy cvetko
BRIGHTON SLSC
Clancy Cvetko is a dedicated surf lifesaver and professional lifeguard with a strong commitment to public safety and youth engagement within Surf Life Saving South Australia. Currently employed as a lifeguard for the Australian Lifeguard Service and YMCA SA, Clancy has extensive experience in both professional and volunteer roles, including as Patrol Captain at Brighton Surf Lifesaving Club. His work spans emergency response, public safety, and rescue operations, with a focus on mentorship and fostering youth involvement in lifesaving services.
Clancy’s passion for the Surf Lifesaving movement began in his youth as a nipper, and his dedication has only grown. He has been an active member of SLSSA’s Emergency Operations Group (EOG) since 2020, participating in key services like the Rescue Water Craft (RWC), Jet Rescue Boat (JRB), and the State Operations Centre. His efforts led to his nomination as a finalist for the DHL Australian Lifeguard of the Year award in 2023.
Clancy is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Laws and Criminology at Adelaide University, allowing him to bring strong leadership, critical thinking, and communication skills to his lifesaving roles.

Lucy Codd
HENLEY SLSC
Lucy Codd is a dedicated and long-standing member of Henley Surf Life Saving Club, having begun her surf lifesaving journey at the age of five through VacSwim before joining the Club with family in 2008. Progressing from Nippers through to senior competition, Lucy has now proudly served as an active patrolling member for 11 years. Lucy currently volunteers as Vice Patrol Captain at Henley and currently holds IRB Crew and Advanced Resuscitation qualifications, while also maintaining involvement in Henley's event committee, her experience's engaging with younger members and contributing to broader frontline operations reflects a strong commitment to Surf Life Saving’s vision of zero preventable deaths and building connected, inclusive communities.
Professionally, Lucy holds a Bachelor of Criminology and is currently completing further studies in Human Resource Management and Project Management. Lucy has spent the past three years working across strategic, technical, and operational roles, developing strong capabilities in problem-solving, stakeholder engagement, collaboration, and evidence-based decision making. With a passion for innovation, inclusion, and improving access to lifesaving education, Lucy brings a thoughtful, forward-looking perspective to governance and is committed to helping shape the future of Surf Life Saving in South Australia.

Layan Saadeh
HENLEY SLSC
Layan Saadeh is a dedicated member of Henley Surf Life Saving Club, recognised for her leadership, community impact, and commitment to inclusion. Born in Saudi Arabia, Layan moved to Australia at the age of 14 and has since built a strong connection to Surf Life Saving. She contributed to the VACSWIM and Surf Babies programs from 2018 to 2024 and currently holds SMAR and IRB qualifications. In 2020, Layan became the youngest Vice Patrol Captain in Henley SLSC history at just 17 years of age. Her service and leadership were further recognised when she was named Young South Australian and City of Charles Sturt Citizen of the Year in 2021. Layan’s involvement reflects a strong commitment to Surf Life Saving’s mission of zero preventable deaths and building inclusive, connected communities.
Professionally, Layan is in her final year of a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Arts, majoring in International Relations, at the University of Adelaide, where she has earned over five scholarships. She is passionate about working in multicultural spaces, particularly with Islamic and Middle Eastern communities, to improve access to lifesaving education and safe coastal participation. A strong advocate for youth involvement in Surf Life Saving, Layan is committed to improving membership growth and youth retention, and to helping young people build early career pathways through Surf Life Saving in South Australia.

Tom Cernev
GLENELG SLSC
Thomas Cernev is an experienced and passionate member of the Glenelg Surf Life Saving Club, with a deep commitment to water safety and community service. He has been an active patrolling member since 2015, contributing over 150 hours annually, and currently serves as a Jet Boat crew member within the Emergency Operations Group. Recently, Thomas has become a Bronze Medallion Trainer, furthering his impact on youth development within Surf Life Saving South Australia.
Thomas holds a Master’s in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge, where he focused on strategic management and sustainability. His professional career as a Systems Engineer at Shoal Group includes leading complex projects and client-facing roles. Thomas’ experience also extends to strategic leadership, having served as the SA Chair of the Engineers Australia Sustainable Engineering Society, where he was responsible for setting direction and achieving goals.
Thomas is also deeply involved in global space research, including work with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction and the Andy Thomas Centre for Space Resources. His diverse background in strategic planning, project management, and sustainability, combined with his extensive volunteer experience, equips him to contribute effectively to the SLSSA Futures Board.

Abby thomas
WEST BEACH SLSC
Abby Thomas is a passionate and dedicated member of the surf lifesaving community with a lifelong commitment to education, leadership, and community service. Joining West Beach Surf Life Saving Club as a Nipper, Abby has grown into key leadership roles, including Age Manager, Youth Coordinator, Trainer, and Administrator. Over the past decade, Abby has trained over 100 members in various awards and was recognized as Trainer of the Year in 2022/23. Her involvement extends beyond the club through her leadership roles with the VACSWIM program, where she has served as Instructor-in-Charge at Semaphore and North Haven, delivering vital water safety education to hundreds of children each summer.
Professionally, Abby is a qualified primary school teacher with the Department for Education, where she specializes in creating supportive and inclusive learning environments. She was also a swimming teacher at iSwim at Immanual College for seven years, teaching children aged 6 months – 13 years old. Her strengths in communication, curriculum development, and child safeguarding seamlessly align with the values of Surf Life Saving SA.
