Become a Trainer, Assessor or Facilitator

Led by the Chief Instructor, the Education team drives the growth and development of lifesavers at each club and plays a critical role in Surf Life Saving across the State. There are many ways to get involved including becoming a:

  • Chief Instructor

  • Trainer

  • Assessor

  • Facilitator

Note: Collectively Trainers, Assessors, and Facilitators are known as TAF.

If you are interested in any of these roles, have a chat to your Chief Instructor.

Chief Instructors

Want to lead Education at your club? The Chief Instructor at each club is a senior leader who oversees all education activities. Essentially an administrator role, they are responsible for determining how many courses of each type need to be run, allocating club trainers and assessors, and coordinating member Skills Maintenance.

A Chief Instructor does not have to be an active Trainer, Assessor or Facilitator (TAF) but typically has previous experience in one or more of these roles. At some clubs the Chief Instructor is supported by 2IC.

If you are interested in becoming Chief Instructor at your club ,please speak with the person currently filling this role and/or your club’s president.

Trainers

Trainers deliver Surf Lifesaving courses to members of their club using resources developed by SLSA and SLSSA. They also play a large role in ensuring new members feel welcome and safe at their club and have a fun and enjoyable learning experience. Trainers do not assess learners - that is the role of the assessor.

Trainers can select which courses they wish to train but must hold proficiency in each course they deliver and initially train under the guidance of a mentor.
The role and duties of a Trainer commonly include:

  • Delivering courses

  • Completing training paperwork

  • Attending assessment sessions to support their learners

Assessors

Assessors are responsible for assessing participants once they have been taught the skills and knowledge required. They determine each learner’s competency against the SLS Award e.g. Bronze Medallion, and any aligned national units of competency.

An Assessor assesses people from their own club and from other clubs. They must be proficient in the same Award and must be/have been a Trainer in the Award.

The minimum age to be an Assessor is 17 years.

FACILITATORS

Facilitators hold a full Certificate IV in Training and Assessment and can train and assess participants in SLS Awards, including the following:

  • SRC

  • Radio Operations

  • Resus (CPR)

  • IRB Crew
