Steps to become a Trainer
The steps to become a Training Officer are:
Complete the Trainer course.
Deliver courses as a Probationary Trainer.
Note: Every TAF needs to ensure that they have met all the requirement to be a patrolling member and that they hold a current Provide First Aid Certificate
To maintain your Training Officer status, you will need to re-endorse each year.
Trainer Course
In this program, learners develop the skills and confidence to deliver training to small groups. Content is tailored to Surf Lifesaving and is undertaken in a friendly, supportive environment. All practical assessments are completed during the workshops so no extra work for you back at your club!
This program covers the TAESS00029 Volunteer Trainer Delivery Skill Set that is recognised across Australia, and across all industries. This means that if training is a career path for you, this course will get you started.
Valued at $1,000 SLSSA provides this course FREE to members who agree to actively participate in the Education team at their club.

You can apply if you:
Are a Financial Member of a SA Surf Lifesaving club
Are 17 years or older
Can commit to working in your club’s Education Team for at least one season

To successfully complete this course you will need to:
Complete eLearning (approximately 26 hrs in total spread across several months)
Attend 3 x face-to-face workshops
Note: All practical assessments are done in the workshops so you MUST attend all sessions.

If you are eligible to teach at a South Australian High School* your expertise is recognised. You simply need to complete the SLSSA Probationary Trainer process then work under the supervision of a qualified person.
If you want to take your skills to the next level and become a Facilitator, able to teach and assess independently, all you need to do is gain the Assessors Skill Set then complete the Probationary Assessor process.
* You must provide evidence of your eligibility to teach High School in SA.
Note: It is strongly recommended you hold an SLS award for one patrol season before progressing to train and/or assess that award.
