How to become a Trainer?

There are four main steps to become a Training Officer and maintain the right to train. These steps are:

  1. Hold TAE Trainer qualifications

  2. Meet the requirements of a Probationary Trainer

  3. Deliver Courses

  4. Work with a Mentor

The following information provides more details about each step, and is in line with the SLSSA Trainer, Assessor, Facilitator (TAF) Endorsement Policy and Procedure (Draft).

To maintain your Training Officer status, you will need to re-endorse each year.

SLS Training Officer Award

This award provides members with the skills and knowledge required to professionally train SLS awards and nationally recognised units of competency using SLSA and SLSSA resources. It allows members to train other SLS members, in their role as a Training Officer, for any awards SLSSA endorses them to deliver.

As SLSSA is a Registered Training Organisation (RTO), all Trainers need qualifications that will allow them to train under the Australian RTO Standards. These are:

  1. Eligible TAE Trainer Skill Sets

  2. Eligible Certificate IV in Training and Assessment

  3. Eligible Teaching degree, which allows someone to teach at High School

Members need to provide SLSSA Member Education team with evidence, in the form of their qualification certificate and transcript of relevant units of competence, so that we can verify.

Teacher to Trainer

With changes to the RTO Standards, those eligible to teach at High School can now become a member of a Club’s Education team and train under supervision after completing the SLSSA Probationary Trainer process, without undertaking a TAESS00029 Volunteer Trainer Delivery Skill Set course.

However, if they gain the Assessors Skill Set, and complete the Probationary Trainers and Assessor process, they will be able to train and assess on their own.

To be considered for this pathway, you must provide evidence of your eligibility to teach High School in SA.

Pronationary Trainer

Once you hold the TAESS00029 Volunteer Trainer Delivery Skill Set, you will can begin the Probationary Trainer process for the award you wish to train. This involves:

  • Once you hold the relevant TAE credential, Member Ed staff then complete a TAF Checklist which is used to assist in identifying other TAF requirements which need to be addressed before you start the Probationary Trainer Process.

This is to ensure that you hold:

    • Relevant TAE Trainer Awards

    • Proficient awards and are up to date with relevant Units of Competency

    • Current Provide First Aid

    • A current SA Department of Human Services Working with Children Check

    • A current National Police Check

    They will also review:

    • What Surf Awards and associated Units you have, for the qualifications you would like to train

    • If you have/are required to complete any associated TAF PD

    • If you have support from your Chief Instructor

If there is anything that is outstanding, along with your Chief instructor, the Member Ed team will assist you in addressing these matters.

  • At this point, you will be provided with ‘What next?’ information, which outlines the Probationary Trainer process as well as some information about the different systems and tasks involved with training.

  • The aim of the Probationary Trainer Process is to ensure that SLSSA is supporting its Trainers and members, by offering a consistent process for training and assessing SLSA awards linked to units of competency and qualifications.

This step of the program is to support and teach new trainers how to deliver the skills and content of any given SLS award, focusing on the details of the strategies and resources specific to the award, rather than the general vocational education skills and techniques.

Once approved to start the Probationary Trainer Process, Member Ed staff will allocate you with the ‘Probationary Training Officer Award’ on Surf Guard. This indicates that you are in this stage of training, and it gives you access to restricted learning and assessment materials.

To move from a Probationary Trainer to an SLSSA Endorsed Training Officer, you will need to follow the Steps to becoming an endorsed Training Officer, which are:

1.Decide which Award you want to become an Endorsed Training Officer in

    • If it has been sometime since a TAF Check list has been conducted, let the Member Ed staff know what Award you plan to train so they can confirm you are proficient in the Award and the units you plan to deliver.

    • This is the requirement for all awards, so you may need to attend a proficiency session and/or complete an RPL process or assessment of current skills and knowledge to update.

    • If it is a club-based award (Bronze, IRB, ART etc), have a chat to your Club’s Chief Instructor about organising a group to assist train.

If it is an EOG Award, have a chat with the Life Saving and Member Education team about when the next course is likely to be scheduled.

    2. Access the resources to support you delivering the course

    • Review the learning materials and Delivery and Assessment Guide for the Award you plan to deliver

    3.Organise a Certificate IV TAE Approved Supervisor/Mentor

    • Work with your Chief Instructor and SLSSA to identify and organise an approved supervisor/mentor who will support you with the delivery of your first training group.

    • Make sure that the SLSSA Member Ed team know who is going to support you BEFORE you start your training.

    4.Deliver Training

    • Being a Teir 1: Probationary Trainer, you need to deliver one FULL course in the Award you would like to train (ie Bronze, IRB Crew etc), under the supervision of a SLSSA Endorsed Certificate IV TAE approved Supervisor/Mentor

    • Requirements of this step:

    • Check that your members meet the prerequisite requirements of the Award you are delivering

    • Deliver the course to a minimum of 3 members

    • Deliver the full course on your own but under the supervision of a supervisor/mentor. Depending on the size of your training group, others can assist with supporting training but as the Probationary Trainer, you must lead the training

    • All candidates must pass assessment, and the Lead Assessors of that group must not have any concerns about the standard of the training which has taken place

    • As the Probationary Trainer, you must attend your group’s assessment.

If delivering a club-based course, your Chief Instructor will need to:

    • Work with you to organise a training group

    • Submit a Form 14 (F14) Training Officer Award, for the award you are delivering

    • In the comment section – include supervisor name and F14 Assessment Group number

    • Submit a F14 for the training group for the assessment

    • This is required two weeks before the assessment date

If you are delivering a EOG Award, the Member Ed team will support you with the above process.

Note: It is strongly recommended to hold an SLS award for one patrol season before progressing to train and/or assess that award.

Mentoring for Training Officers

Once you have completed the Probationary Training Process, you will be an endorsed Tier 1 - Probationary Training Officer for the Award you have delivered.

For the next 12 months, you should work with your Supervisor/Mentor in the delivery of every future course of that same award. This support should include at least 3 indirect check-in points throughout the delivery.

As time goes by and as you become more experienced, the level of supervision changes depending on your tier classification.

Please note: More information and support about this for Mentors is coming.
