Steps To Become An Assessor

The steps to become an Assessor are:

  1. Complete the Assessor course.

  2. Deliver courses as a Probationary Assessor

Assessor Course

Members who are already a trainer, or hold a teaching qualification, can take the next step to become an Assessor. This program, contextualised to a surf environment, teaches learners the principles of assessments and the rules of evidence that ensures assessments are fair and valid.

In this course you complete the TAESS00019 Assessor Skill Set and gain the following three units of competence:

  • TAEASS412 Assess competence

  • TAEASS413 Participate in assessment validation

  • TAEDES411 Use nationally recognised training products to meet vocational training needs

Together with your Trainer qualifications, this means you are nearly half way to holding a full Certificate IV in Training and Assessment!

Valued at $1,500 SLSSA provides this course FREE to members who agree to assess for a minimum of one season.

  • You can apply if you are:

    • Already a qualified trainer in surf

    • A financial member of a SA Surf Club

    • Can commit to assessing for a minimum of one season

  • To successfully complete this course you will need to:

    • Complete eLearning (approximately 30 hours across 9 months)

    • Attend 3 x weekends of face-to-face workshops (all full days Saturday and Sunday)

    • Complete an assessment back at your workplace/club

  • Applications close 15 April 2026

    Workshops:

    • Workshop 1: Saturday 25 & Sunday 26 July

    • Workshop 2: Saturday 29 & Sunday 30 August

    • Workshop 3: Saturday 17 & Sunday 18 October

  • If you are eligible to teach at a South Australian High School* your expertise is recognised. By completing the Assessors Skill Set then the Probationary Assessor process, and you can train and assess surf courses that you are proficient in.

    * You must provide evidence of your eligibility to teach High School in SA.
