JUNIOR ACTIVITIES

Junior activities give children aged 5 to 13 of all abilities and experience levels a fun, safe and inclusive way to get involved in Surf Life Saving. From Nippers and Adaptive Nippers to entry-level patrol pathways, children can build beach and water safety skills, confidence, fitness and friendships at their own pace.

Explore the options below to find the right pathway for your child.

Nippers

What is it?

The Nippers program introduces children aged 5 to 13 to the surf in a fun, safe, inclusive and educational environment. Through age-appropriate activities, Nippers learn essential beach and water safety, surf awareness, basic first aid and lifesaving skills while building confidence, fitness, teamwork and community connection. The program also introduces children to surf sports, including swimming, board racing, wades, relays, beach flags, beach sprints, ironperson events and more.

Where can it lead?

Nippers can lead to youth development programs, the Surf Rescue Certificate, the Bronze Medallion and a wide range of club roles.

What are the requirements?

  • All Nippers will complete a Preliminary Evaluation

  • Nippers aged 8+ wanting to compete in water events will need to complete a Competition Evaluation

Will I need to get wet?

  • Yes

This could suit your child if they are:

  • Aged between 5 and 13 years old

  • Keen to build their confidence in and around the water

  • Interested in trying new activities and surf sports

  • Looking to make friends

Adaptive Nippers

What is it?

Adaptive Nipper programs provide children with additional needs an inclusive and supportive way to enjoy the beach, build water confidence and take part in Surf Life Saving. Traditional Nippers activities are adapted to individual needs, allowing all participants to learn essential surf safety, water awareness and beach skills at their own pace.

Guided by trained volunteers, with one-on-one support available where needed, the programs aim to help every child feel valued, empowered and connected to the beach and lifesaving community.

Where can it lead?

For children who wish to progress further, Adaptive Nippers can also provide a gradual pathway into the mainstream Nippers program, while recognising and celebrating all forms of participation.
