Leadership programs support members at different stages to build confidence, strengthen their leadership skills and prepare for greater responsibility within Surf Life Saving. Through mentoring, workshops, shared learning and practical experiences, participants can develop valuable skills, connect with other leaders and help shape the future of the movement.

Emerging Leaders Program

What is it?

The Emerging Leaders Program gives young Surf Life Saving members the opportunity to grow their leadership skills, build confidence and take the next step in their lifesaving journey. Designed for future leaders, the program combines hands-on training, mentoring and personal development to prepare you for roles such as Patrol Captain, Trainer, Age Manager or club committee member.

Through workshops, team-building activities and real-world experiences, you’ll develop valuable skills in communication, teamwork, problem-solving and decision-making while building strong connections with other motivated members. It’s a practical stepping stone for young members ready to lead, inspire others and make a positive impact in Surf Life Saving.

Where can it lead?

This can prepare you for roles such as Patrol Captain, Trainer, Age Manager or committee member.

National Leadership College

What is it?

The National Leadership College is the pinnacle of Surf Life Saving Australia’s leadership development, connecting national leadership competencies with grassroots Surf Life Saving through interactive, shared learning. You’ll hear from keynote speakers and take part in facilitator-led workshops designed to build on your existing leadership experience.

The program is suited to experienced leaders, ideally within Surf Life Saving, including Patrol Captains, Club Captains, Chief Instructors, Age Managers and members in other club leadership roles.

This can support progression into senior club, state and national leadership roles.

Women’s Mentoring program

What is it?

Surf Life Saving Australia’s Women’s Mentoring Program supports greater gender equality by helping increase the number of women in leadership roles across Surf Life Saving. Launched in 2020, the 12-month program pairs 20 mentors with 20 mentees to build confidence, leadership capability and professional skills. Through the program, you’ll be supported to grow as a leader within Surf Life Saving and beyond, strengthening your development in both volunteer and professional roles.

SLSA Leadership Masterclass

What is it?

The National Leaders’ Masterclass is a leadership development program for Surf Life Saving members aged 30 and over who hold senior roles within the movement. Designed for members with previous leadership experience, either through Surf Life Saving programs or external opportunities, the Masterclass is a key step in the SLS Leadership Pathway.

You’ll strengthen your leadership skills, connect with like-minded members from across the country and gain a deeper understanding of Surf Life Saving’s national direction. The program will challenge you to think strategically, advocate for change and bring new ideas back to your club and community while contributing to SLSA’s mission of saving lives, creating great Australians and building better communities.

Where can it lead?

This can support senior strategic, governance and change-leadership roles across the movement.

What are the requirements?

  • Minimum 30 years old

  • Must hold senior roles within Surf Life Saving
