Award Prerequisites

  • ·       Financial club member

    ·       At least 13 years at time of assessment

    ·       Complete 200m swim in 5 minutes or less (goggles and mask permitted) in a swimming pool of at least 25 m in length OR over a measured open water course

  • Upon successful completion of the Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), members will have completed some elements of the Bronze Medallion (BM). If the member meets the prerequisites stated below, they can transition to their BM and receive recognition for the skills and knowledge that they have already obtained.

    If this option is taken and the member is eligible, they may not need to attend all of the BM face-to face training sessions if you are delivering a combined SRC – BM and Bronze Medallion course. Please not the required eLearning and Form 14s are different to the full BM course. Please check the Form 14 requirements and delivery documents below.

    ·       Financial club member

    ·       Completed their SRC within 3 years prior to commencing the SRC – BM Transition course

    ·       Proficient SRC award holder

    ·       completed a minimum of 10 patrolling hours as a qualified SRC award holder within the last 12 months[AL1] 

    ·       are confident in their abilities in radio and rescue operations

    ·       At least 14 years to commence training

    ·       At least 15 years at date of final assessment

    ·       Complete 400m swim in 9 minutes or less (goggles and mask permitted), in a swimming pool of at least 25m in length OR over a measured open-water course

Credit Transfer for SRC units of competency they already hold:

Form 14 Requirements

Surf Rescue Certificate (CPR Endorsed)

Member previously held Surf Rescue Certificate (CPR Endorsed)

If a member already holds the award but needs to sit a full assessment again. You will not be able to add them to the usual Form 14 as the system only allows a member to obtain an award once. If this is the case, use the units of competency associated for the award instead.

·       Select RPL not Award

·       Assessment Details: Assessment type: RCC/RPL

·       Award Type: Award: SRC - BM RPL Module

·       Member Ed Staff: Add remaining BM units to a separate Form 14

Bronze Medallion

Member previously held Bronze Medallion

If a member already holds the award but needs to sit a full assessment again. You will not be able to add them to the usual Form 14, as the system only allows a member to obtain an award once. If this is the case, complete the Form 14 by using the units of competency associated for the award instead.

·       The required eLearning is located in the SLS Members Hub/Applications/eLearning/Training Library/Aquatic Rescue section 

Skills Maintenance Requirements

Members are required to participate in SLS Skills Maintenance to maintain the award. Please refer to the yearly State and National updates regarding tasks and requirements.

Please note, Skills Maintenance

·       Only updates the award and not the associated Units of Competency

·       Does not provide updated Provide First Aid (PFA) or CPR units of competency.

o   To update PFA, members will need to attend a PFA course

o   To update CPR, members can either complete a commercial CPR course with SLSSA or an external provider; or enrol and complete the SLS Resuscitation course which is managed and delivered at club level.
