State Gear Steward, IRB Racing Referee and IRB Rep on the Surf Sports Advisory Committee.
Moana SLSC Member Danny Powell has stepped up into one of the toughest volunteer roles in Surf, State Gear Steward. Danny replaces Surf Life Saving SA Life Member Dave Earl who recently retired ahead of the season after 8 years in the role.
Danny has been working closely with Dave, learning the ropes, over the past 3 years in the gear shed at Lonsdale, on the beach and in the truck by Dave’s side. “It’s been great working with Dave and I hope he will still be around to draw on his experience. I am looking forward to getting stuck in and helping Surf Life Saving SA put on a great Surf Sports season this year” said Danny.
As State Gear Steward, Danny is responsible for the safekeeping, distribution and maintenance of State gear and equipment. He will assist Surf Life Saving SA to maintain a gear and equipment register ensuring that all pieces of equipment are in safe working order.
The State Gear Steward is a huge role and critical to the success of our State events and we are currently seeking volunteers to assist Danny by; packing for events, checking and fixing damaged equipment between events, transporting gear to and from events and procuring new equipment as needed. If you have skills and time to assist with Gear Stewarding this season please contact the Surf Sports Department at Surf Life Saving SA on 08 8354 6900.
Danny will also be taking on the Referee role for IRB Racing this season and has joined the Surf Sports Advisory Committee as the IRB representative. He said “I have learned a lot as State Deputy Referee and Officiating at National IRB events for the past three years. I am pleased that Surf Life Saving SA has asked me to take on the role of IRB Referee this season. The future for IRB Racing in this State has a lot of potential and it is exciting to be a part of it. The IRB Racers have done a fantastic job building the sport to where it is now and it’s encouraging to see the State body’s commitment to the sport growing and I want to help us get to the next level with our sport”.
Surf Life Saving SA is committed to talent development and sustainability within our volunteer official’s workforce. Surf Life Saving SA is supporting this vision this season through a number of key appointments in leadership positions for officials, recruitment and training drives, mentorships, talent identification and pathway programs in officiating.
Surf Life Saving SA would like to thank Dave Earl for his many years of exceptional service as Gear Steward and IRB Referee and we welcome Danny into his new role. We encourage all of our Members to say hi and lend a hand if you see him on the beach this summer.
