POOL LIFEGUARD UPDATE COURSE

The Pool Lifeguard course (Skill set SISSS00111) aims to teach you emergency rescue techniques, swimming skills and basic spinal management techniques as well as the finer points of pool lifeguarding. Candidates of this program will receive comprehensive training in aquatic emergency care, emergency management, oxygen resuscitation and pool surveillance. Successful candidates will have the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users.

Prerequisites:

  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or HLTFA311A Apply First Aid — Copy of current certificate must be supplied. (with at least 6 months validity) Your certificate will not be issued to you without a current First Aid certificate.
  • Participants must be 16 years of age

Physical elements of the course:

  • Retrieve an object from the deep parts of the pool (3-5m)
  • Swim 25m, and then tow a patient back 25m in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
  • General strength and fitness to tread water for extended periods of time

Candidates also need to read through a learner guide and complete an activity book prior to the course. This will be emailled through to you within a few days of your booking.

Mental Health First Aid

This 12-hour Mental Health First Aid course is aimed at adults (18 years and over) within the Surf Life Saving community, as well as the general community.

It provides information for initial support to adults who are developing mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.

The topics that will be covered vary from course to course, as it is developed to cover the more relevant topics to what we may encounter on the beach, as well as what we may encounter in our workplaces.

Topics include but not limited to

  • Depression
  • Anxiety Problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance Use Problems

Mental Health Crisis Situations covered are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours

The course curriculum is based on the Mental Health Guidelines and is accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

The Pool Lifeguard course (Skill set SISSS00111) aims to teach you emergency rescue techniques, swimming skills and basic spinal management techniques as well as the finer points of pool lifeguarding. Candidates of this program will receive comprehensive training in aquatic emergency care, emergency management, oxygen resuscitation and pool surveillance. Successful candidates will have the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users.

Prerequisites:

  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or HLTFA311A Apply First Aid — Copy of current certificate must be supplied. (with at least 6 months validity) Your certificate will not be issued to you without a current First Aid certificate.
  • Participants must be 16 years of age

Physical elements of the course:

  • Retrieve an object from the deep parts of the pool (3-5m)
  • Swim 25m, and then tow a patient back 25m in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
  • General strength and fitness to tread water for extended periods of time

The Pool Lifeguard course (Skill set SISSS00111) aims to teach you emergency rescue techniques, swimming skills and basic spinal management techniques as well as the finer points of pool lifeguarding. Candidates of this program will receive comprehensive training in aquatic emergency care, emergency management, oxygen resuscitation and pool surveillance. Successful candidates will have the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users.

Prerequisites:

  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or HLTFA311A Apply First Aid — Copy of current certificate must be supplied. (with at least 6 months validity) Your certificate will not be issued to you without a current First Aid certificate.
  • Participants must be 16 years of age

Physical elements of the course:

  • Retrieve an object from the deep parts of the pool (3-5m)
  • Swim 25m, and then tow a patient back 25m in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
  • General strength and fitness to tread water for extended periods of time

Candidates also need to read through a learner guide and complete an activity book prior to the course. This will be emailled through to you within a few days of your booking.

MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID

Mental Health First Aid

This 12-hour Mental Health First Aid course is aimed at adults (18 years and over) within the Surf Life Saving community, as well as the general community.

It provides information for initial support to adults who are developing mental illness or experiencing a mental health crisis.

The topics that will be covered vary from course to course, as it is developed to cover the more relevant topics to what we may encounter on the beach, as well as what we may encounter in our workplaces.

Topics include but not limited to

  • Depression
  • Anxiety Problems
  • Psychosis
  • Substance Use Problems

Mental Health Crisis Situations covered are:

  • Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
  • Non-suicidal self-injury
  • Panic attacks
  • Traumatic events
  • Severe effects of drug or alcohol use
  • Severe psychotic states
  • Aggressive behaviours

The course curriculum is based on the Mental Health Guidelines and is accredited by Mental Health First Aid Australia.

The Pool Lifeguard course (Skill set SISSS00111) aims to teach you emergency rescue techniques, swimming skills and basic spinal management techniques as well as the finer points of pool lifeguarding. Candidates of this program will receive comprehensive training in aquatic emergency care, emergency management, oxygen resuscitation and pool surveillance. Successful candidates will have the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users.

Prerequisites:

  • HLTAID003 Provide First Aid or HLTFA311A Apply First Aid — Copy of current certificate must be supplied. (with at least 6 months validity) Your certificate will not be issued to you without a current First Aid certificate.
  • Participants must be 16 years of age

Physical elements of the course:

  • Retrieve an object from the deep parts of the pool (3-5m)
  • Swim 25m, and then tow a patient back 25m in less than 1 minute and 45 seconds
  • Swim 200m in less than 6 minutes
  • General strength and fitness to tread water for extended periods of time

Candidates also need to read through a learner guide and complete an activity book prior to the course. This will be emailled through to you within a few days of your booking.

The Provide First Aid (formerly Senior or Apply First Aid) course aims to develop the knowledge and skills for a person to manage emergency first aid situations and deliver competent emergency care until the arrival of professional medical support.

A Provide First Aid certificate from Surf Life Saving SA provides quality training in first aid and will certify the participant to perform life support skills. The Provide First Aid course aligns to the National Guideline Standards for first aid.

By successfully completing this course, participants will receive the following units of competency:

HLTAID003 Provide First Aid
HLTAID001 Provide Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
HLTAID002 Provide Basic Emergency Life Support

Course Content

  • Apply the principals of first aid
  • Recognition and management of emergency situations
  • Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
  • Treatment of infection, shock, fractures, bleeding and burns
  • Emergencies due to lack of oxygen, excess heat or cold
  • Recognition and management of medical conditions that may need emergency care, including heart attack, stroke, asthma, diabetes and epilepsy
  • Management of common medical emergencies
  • Treatment of poisoning including venomous bites and stings

Methods of Delivery and Course Duration

Full Course: pre course online workbook and 1 day of face to face delivery and assessment

Update Course: 1 day of face to face delivery and assessment (no workbook required). Must provide evidence of current First Aid certificate prior to commencement.

Course Fees

$170 per person (general public), $128 for YMCA Employees, $95 for SLSSA members. (GST exempt)

The CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) course delivers the essential principals, knowledge and skills to maintain breathing and circulation in any emergency situation on adults, children and infants. Minimum age requirement 10 years.

Casualty assessment
Emergency action principals - D.R.S.A.B.C.D
External cardiac compressions (CPR) 
One and two operator Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation rates and techniques
Procedure for placing a patient in the recovery position
